|The Yellow House|
- "Anne went up the narrow stairs and into that little east room with a full heart. It was as a shrine to her. Here her mother had dreamed the exquisite, happy dreams of anticipated motherhood; here that red sunrise light had fallen over them both in the sacred hour of birth; here her mother had died. Anne looked about her reverently, her eyes with tears. It was for her one of the jewelled hours of life that gleam out radiantly forever in memory."
- —Anne of the Island (Chapter 21: The Roses of Yesterday)[src]
The history of the Yellow House is unknown. The construction completion date is not stated in the Anne series, nor the builder.
Walter Shirley, Bertha Willis, and Anne Shirley all lived in the Yellow House. Walter Shirley and Bertha Willis, schoolteachers, lived there from their wedding in June 1864 to their deaths. However, it is known that Anne Shirley lived there for six months after her birth.
Three months after Anne's birth, Walter and Bertha Shirley died. After their death, Anne Shirley moved in with the Thomas family, and was later to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at Green Gables.
After Anne moved out, a tall, thin, old woman, her husband, and daughter moved in. Described in Anne of the Island briefly, the woman said that her daughter went to school to Bertha Willis, and loved her.
The Yellow House was described as being very shabby, located on an out-of-the-way side street in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia. Lilacs by the gate, it had a kitchen, parlour, and two rooms upstairs. The east gable was where Anne was born.
