"I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet, but I've never been able to believe it. I don't believe a rose would be as nice if it was called a thistle or a skunk-cabbage."

Also known as

The Hollow

Location

Glen St. Mary, Four Winds, Prince Edward Island

"There was a certain wild woodsiness and solitude about Rainbow Valley, in spite of its nearness to the village, which endeared it to the children of Ingleside."
Rainbow Valley[src]

Rainbow Valley was a secluded place near Ingleside where the Blythe and Meredith children, along with Mary Vance, often played.

History

Location

Rainbow Valley was located behind Ingleside. It was also near the Hidden Spring, where Rosemary and her lovers trysted.

Physical appearance

"Little, winding, fairy paths ran here and there over spruce roots cushioned with moss. Wild cherry trees, that in blossom time would be misty white, were scattered all over the valley, mingling with the dark spruces. A little brook with amber waters ran through it from the Glen village."
Rainbow Valley[src]

Etymology

"The Hollow was 'the Hollow' no longer. Walter had begun to feel that such a delightful spot deserved a name more in keeping with its romantic possibilities. One rainy afternoon they had to play in the garret but the sun broke out in the early evening and flooded the Glen with splendour ... It was the most magnificent rainbow they had ever seen. One end seemed to rest on the very spire of the Presbyterian church while the other dropped down into the reedy corner of the pond that ran into the upper end of the valley. And Walter then and there named it Rainbow Valley."
—The naming of Rainbow Valley[src]
