Newbridge is a bustling little village in Prince Edward Island, located near Avonlea.

HistoryEdit

Several members of Diana Barry's family lived in Newbridge and often visited their relatives in Avonlea. In the late 1870s, Newbridge had its own minister whose wife was said to dress so fashionably and thus setting a very bad example.[1]

In June 1876, Anne Shirley and Matthew Cuthbert drove through Newbridge on their way from the Bright River station to Green Gables.[2]

"Through Newbridge, a bustling little village where dogs barked at them and small boys hooted and curious faces peered from the windows, they drove, still in silence."
Anne of Green Gables[src]

In the summer of 1880, the guests of White Sands Hotel got up a concert in aid of the Charlottetown hospital, and hunted out all the available amateur talent in the surrounding districts to help it along. A Newbridge resident Milton Clark was to give a violin solo.[3]

In June 1881, after finishing her first year at Queen's Academy, the Newbridge trustees offered Jane Andrews their school.[4] Jane accepted their offer and taught there for the next two years. According to Gilbert Blythe, the Newbridge people liked her.[5] When Anne Shirley decided to study at Redmond College, Jane resigned from her position in Newbridge so she could teach in Avonlea, succeeding her friend as the local schoolmaster.[6]

"...she has her name on the Inspector's Roll of Honor and the Newbridge people are in a terrible state over her leaving."
Mrs. Andrews

Annetta Bell's family lived somewhere between Avonlea and Newbridge. They formerly lived in the Newbridge school district, but, by reason of hauling their house fifty yards north of its old site were now in Avonlea.[7]

LocationEdit

Newbridge was located exactly half-way between Bright River and Avonlea. It was four miles from Green Gables and four miles from Bright River station. The nearest villages were White Sands and Spencervale. Shortly before getting to Newbridge from Bright River there was a road completely arched over with huge, wide-spreading apple-trees, called the Avenue by the Newbridge people, but renamed to White Way of Delight by Anne Shirley.[8]
