Muriel Stacy was the beloved teacher of the Avonlea school, who taught there from 1878 to 1880. Miss Stacy took over the school after Teddy Phillips left.

Teaching Avonlea school[]

Miss Stacy was loved and admired by all, and, in particular, Anne Shirley. While Anne was cooped up with a sprained ankle, information kept flowing to her about the wonderful new teacher. Things such as "field days", "Friday afternoon recitations", and "physical culture exercises". The pupils were delighted by these new additions!

She encouraged them to look for new horizons and organized a special class for those who wished to attend Queen's Academy.

After the acceptance tests for Queen's Academy, she married an unknown man and moved away to California. She was unable to attend Anne and Gilbert's wedding.

Etymology[]

Muriel is a female given name of Irish and Gaelic origin and means sparkling or shining sea.
