- Richard Farnsworth portrayed Matthew in Anne of Green Gables (1985). Farnsworth also appeared in the photo in Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel (1987) and in archive footage in Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000).

- The official Anne of Green Gables website describes him as, Matthew Cuthbert was Marilla’s brother and became Anne’s adoptive father. Good-natured and shy, Mathew was the one who convinced Marilla to keep Anne. His soft-spoken nature hides his intense love for the child, as he longs to share in the extremes of her over-active imagination helping to make Anne’s wishes come true; demonstrated when he buys her a ball gown with the puffiest of puff-sleeves.[1]
