Jack was born in late 1890 in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, to Diana and Fred Wright. A few years after his birth Wright family moved to Lone Willow Farm. Jack raised there along with his older siblings, brother Fred and sister Anne Cordelia, and children of Davy and Dora.
In September 1897, when he was six years old, Jack attended Avonlea School, where his parents and siblings also studied. In spring 1899 Anne visited Avonlea. In that time Jack was almost nine years old and he wanted to be a soldier.
