Isabella was born in the first half of the 19th century, most likely in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island. She was raised with her brother Harmon and began school at the age of six. Like the other women in the village, she did not continue with her studies and waited for someone to propose, living in her brother's house.
In summer 1882, their neighbour, James A. Harrison, visited their house from time to time, usually to play a game of checkers with Harmon. The women of Avonlea suspected him to go there just to see Isabella and would marry her.
Isabella is a female given name of Hebrew origin and means God is my oath.
