Behind the scenes[]
Cultural references
- The titles of this and the previous episode ("Your Will Shall Decide Your Destiny") are references to Chapter 23 of Jane Eyre, Charlotte Brontë's novel which had an influence on L.M. Montgomery's writing. The titular character works as a teacher for wealthy Mr. Rochester, whom she secretly loves. Believing he is about to get married to another woman, she wants to leave his house and go to Ireland. Jane eventually tells Mr. Rochester, "I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will, which I now exert to leave you.", to which he replies: "And your will shall decide your destiny."
- The Newsie mentions some of the articles in that day's edition of local newspapers, including the scientific prediction of the greenhouse effect. Although this theory of warming up Earth's surface was known at the time, the term 'greenhouse' was first used as late as 1901, five years after the setting of this episode (summer 1896).
- Anne makes up a story about her parents travelling to India in service of the queen. In the late 19th century, India was a part of the British Empire. The queen Anne mentions is none other than Queen Victoria, the ruler of the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901.
- At the train station in Nova Scotia Anne recites Henry and Emma (1709) by Matthew Pryor and Sonnet 14 (If thou must love me, let it be for nought) (1850) by Elizabeth Barrett Browning.
- Anne once again quotes the line If all the world hated you... from Jane Eyre.
