Ella May MacPherson was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson, the sister of Moody Spurgeon and a schoolmate of Anne Shirley.

Ella May was born in the 1860s in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, to Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson. She was raised there along with her brother Moody Spurgeon

Ella May likely attended Avonlea school at the age of six and studied there under the guidance of Mr. Phillips and later Miss Stacy

When Anne Shirley returned to school after weeks of absence, Ella May gave her an enormous yellow pansy cut from the covers of a floral catalogue. However, Ella May's affection for Anne changed after the Christmas concert that took place in December 1877. After the concert, Ella May's brother Moody said that Anne had put on airs about her recitation therefore Charlie Sloane fought him. Because of that Ella May did not speak to Anne for the rest of the winter.
