"To Albert and Barbara,
and for Celia"
For an inner-city orphan, a Northern California farm may be the only chance she has left-
Fifteen-year-old orphan Ana Cortez is out of options. She's escaped another foster family and is destined for a group home–unless she agrees to attend a farm trainee program in Northern California. Street-smart but far from green-thumbed, Ana is determined to work hard in hopes of emancipating herself on her sixteenth birthday.
When Emmett Garber arrives to pick up his new trainee, he's sure there's been a mistake. What help could this slight city girl be on his farm? But his sister Abbie, hiding from her own troubled past, thinks Ana might be just what what they need. As Ana adjusts to the small town of Hadley, she finds friendships with misfit Rye and the possibility of something more with her dirt-biking neighbor Cole. But when she inadvertently stirs up trouble in town, Ana is afraid she's ruined her last chance at finding a place to belong. (from the 2015 Penguin Books original edition)
